Members are encouraged to present ideas and suggestions. The success of the organization is measured by the commitment of our members to assure objectives are achieved. Some of the areas for volunteer opportunities include: Board Positions; Spring Art Show; Display Committee; Newsletter Articles; Website; Workshops; Art-related trips; Social Functions, etc.
Monthly Meetings
Monthly meetings are held every third Tuesday of the month (September to May) at the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church at 7:30 PM. We begin with a short business meeting to review current issues and events, followed by a scheduled program presentation/demonstration by guest artists. Invited guest speakers are masters in the arts in areas such as watercolor, acrylic, pastel, oil, faux finishing, ceramics, woodworking, dinnerware painting, jewelry design, photography, illustration, etc. All members are encouraged to attend free of charge and non-members are welcome with a $3 attendance fee.
Trips and excursions
Our members enjoy special day trips to museums, galleries and artists' studios around the Savannah area or to locations that can be reached by a one day travel schedule. Docent tours of new shows at The Telfair Museum are planned from time to time for our members. Possible group travel to artist communities elsewhere around the country or the world is being considered with the help of our Sponsor, Four Seasons Travel.

This is how this association was born and how it has grown in the words of the founder, accomplished artist, wonderful teacher and exceptional person in every way, Betty Skinner:
"In 1983, a few artists exhibited their work on a pegboard in the hallway of the old Marshwood Club House. This group became the nucleus of the Landings Art Association.
In 1984, after doing a portrait demonstration for the Landlovers, they asked me to teach an art class for Landlovers members only. This excluded non-members and also men. Therefore, I felt we needed our own art group for anyone who was interested. I asked General Will Persons to go with me to speak with Don Ryder, the top Braniger person, to present the idea of being able to offer art activities in addition to golf and tennis. Our idea was that it would help in the marketing of this lovely island. Mr. Ryder was impressed and told us to go ahead.
In 1985, John and Alice McClelland settled here. Knowing that John was a professional illustrator and portrait artist, I asked him to help us get started. We put a questionaire in 26 mail tubes. In a short time, 26 favorable answers were returned to us and we were off and running. We met in Carol Jones' home to decide on a name and agenda for meetings, programs, dues, by-laws and officers. The first officers were Betty Skinner - President, Carol Jones - Vice-President, John McClelland - Treasurer, Alice McClelland - Assistant Treasurer, Helen Cranman - Program Chairman and Hazel Brown White - By-laws Chairman.
In 1986, we had our first meeting at the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church in what is now Liston Hall. We still meet there on the third Tuesday of each month. Our first exhibits were held in an empty store in the Village and our Gallery was another empty store. The Landings Library had its beginning in the back of our Gallery. When that store was rented, I met with Bill Latimore and asked if we could have the empty walls in the new Plantation Club, near the Pro Shop for our Gallery. We have provided a continuous exhibit for the pleasure of our residents and guests.
We continue to grow and add many new activities including a website. I am so proud of what has happened over the years. The Spring Art Show is our biggest event and gets better every year.
These are the facts as I know them to be."
