Sandra Colquitt
Savannah native, Sandra Colquitt, knew at an early age that she wanted to be an artist. Formal art education began at age ten at the Telfair Museum and Academy of Art, and later with Savannah artist Agusta Oelshig. She holds BFA degree in Art from the University of Georgia and has studied with noted teachers in New York and at seminars throughout the country. She has been painting portraits professionally for many years and has been the recipient of numerous awards, among those the selection, twice, as a finalist in the annual Artist's Magazine's International Portrait Competition. She is a juried member of the Portrait Society of Atlanta and the Portrait Society of America, and the Portrait Institute of New York. Sandra specializes in oil portraiture and her subjects range from children and family portraits to personalities in the business and corporate world. Her work is repesented in private and public collections throughout the Southeast, inculding The Georgia Ports Authority, the judicial system of Georgia, and most recently the permanent collection of Hospice Savannah. Of her work Sandra states, "The challenge of portraying the human face and form has always been a special fascination. I strive first and foremost for realism in the classical tradition, and a strong painting in terms of composition and the other design elements. Likeness is of prime importance. I want to bring to the portrait not only an exact physical likeness, but a sense of the vitality and pressence of the individual. I love being an artist, and God has blessed me with allowing me to portray his creations through the medium of paint.".
The artist works from live sittings and/or photographs. At an initial planning meeting details of the portait are discussed, and decisions regarding the type of portrait - formal or informal- type of clothing, etc., are made. A sitting is then scheduled at which time poses are planned and photograpy is done. The client and artist select the best pose, and the artist does sketches and a color study so that the client will have a clear idea of how the portrait will delvelope. When the sketches are approved by the client the artist begins the final canvas. Sittings may be held, or the artist can proceed using the study sketches and photographs.
