Marilyn Foley
A graduate of Wellesley College and a Wellesley Scholar, Marilyn Foley received a BA degree with a major in Art History. After college, she did graduate work in painting at Rutgers University and the Art Students League in New York where she studied with Reginald Marsh. Later Ms. Foley returned to Wellesley to teach both painting and sculpture. Painting since the age of eight, she has continued her intense interest in art for over sixty years. Along the way she combined her role of painter with that of wife, mother and teacher of mathematics and science. Over twenty-five years ago Foley left the classroom and has been painting professionally ever since. Her move to Savannah, Georgia in 1993 has provided a wonderful bounty of new images bathed in soft, southern light. Ms. Foley's work has been inspired by other places she has lived and traveled. Among her works you will see marine scenes from the Massachusetts coast, historic buildings from the "New England" village of Bedford, New York, farm houses and blue-shuttered windows from Provence, town squares and village roads from Burgundy, church domes from Italy, brightly painted doors from Santorini, the romantic ruins of Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire and stunning views of Washington National Cathedral.
Ms. Foley's paintings have been exhibited in New York City with the Knickerbocker Artists as well as the National Arts and Salmagundi Clubs, the Education Department of the Museum of Modern Art and the World Financial Center. Recently, she was commissioned to do a series of paintings of Washington National Cathedral to be part of its Centennial Celebration. Over 20 watercolors of the Cathedral comprised her solo exhibition in the Tower Gallery from December 2007 till January 2009.
Foley is a member of and has received prestigious awards from the Copley Society of Boston, the Hudson Valley Art Association and the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. A Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, Ms. Foley’s work was one of 66 chosen from over 1500 submissions to be included in the Society’s 1998 Annual Exhibition and one of 30 paintings selected for a year-long traveling show. Close to home, she has exhibited at the Landings Art Association Shows since 1996 and was awarded two Honorable Mentions, two first prizes in watercolor and four Best of Show ribbons. She has had four one-woman shows at Iocovozzi Fine Art Gallery in Savannah, the last her 80th Birthday exhibit in October, 2009. Ms. Foley is one of 14 artists to be featured in a recent issue of Watercolor Magic titled “Watercolor Basics.” The editors of The Artist’s Magazine and Watercolor Magic joined to publish this special edition which they state includes a “comprehensive collection of articles by some of today’s best and brightest watercolorists and instructors." Her biography is included in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's Who in the World."
